πŸ’¬ Using Perspective Language to Disagree

Hello friend,

I hope you've had a fantastic week.

I'm looking forward to attending a number of events at the Guernsey Literary Festival this weekend (and over the next fortnight). In fact, I have taken next week off to cram in as much culture as I can. If you're Guernsey-based, or have come over for the event, and you happen to spot me, I'd love it if you came over and said hello.

Now, let's get to this weekend's digest...

✏️ Doodle Essays

This week's doodle essay shares a phrase to try in professional (and perhaps personal) disagreements: "I see things differently". You might be surprised at what happens when you use perspective language; I encourage you to read more about it and give it a try.

Here are three articles from other creators you might enjoy:

  • This fantastic article, from Hana at Card Catalog, shares a step-by-step methodology for evaluating any claim and exploring any subject. If you want to cut through the deluge of AI slop, this is a must-read.
  • David Epstein, from Range Widely, shares a practical approach to improving your information diet in this article.
  • This short article from Laura Vanderkam reminded me of the concept of time confetti (my doodle here and below) and suggests strategies for minimising it. I'm really enjoying Laura's email newsletter at the moment.

My video history from the past week is an eclectic mix of "how to choose your first [insert instrument title here]" type videos. I think my search history might have something to do with this recent episode of Cal Newport's podcast, Deep Questions, which includes an interesting discussion about the difference between a hobby and a disciplined practice.

One of the instruments I have been deep diving into is the handpan (a type of drum). You can hear a wonderful example of its meditative sound in this video. If you happen to play handpan, I'd love to hear from you...

My favourite podcast episode this week was Run, Switzer, Run: The Women Who Broke the Marathon Taboo (from the Cautionary Tales archive). It's the London Marathon this weekend, so this feels like timely share.

I also enjoyed this episode of Lenny's Podcast featuring one of my favourite communication teachers, Wes Kao.

That's all from me today. Have a great week, and I will be in touch again next weekend.

Best wishes,

Martine
