πŸ›οΈ The Forgotten Pillar of Health

Hello friend,

I hope you've had a great week.

Today's digest combines some of my favourite topics: the arts, health, productivity systems, ambition, apps, and... yogurt. Yes, I love a good yogurt 🀣

Please enjoy today's eclectic offering.

✏️ Doodle Essays

This week's doodle is about a sometimes forgotten pillar of health: the arts. It was inspired by Daisy Fancourt's fantastic book, Art Cure. I had the pleasure of seeing Daisy speak at the Guernsey Literary Festival last month. You can read some of my reflections in this week's doodle essay.

If you're curious about the books I'm reading, you can see my library in Notion here: Martine's Library.

In light of this week's essay, it would be rude not to firmly recommend Art Cure by Daisy Fancourt.

Today's video selection is going to appear a little off topic, but please bear with me... it's a great tutorial on how to make yogurt at home.

Yes, I've been making yogurt. I made mine in my Instant Pot, but the process is basically the same as shown in the video.

Did you know yogurt is a fermented food? If you've followed me for a while, you will know I am a keen fermenter and read a lot about the health benefits of fermented foods. If you're looking for a great introduction to fermentation, I always recommend this book.

It turns out yogurt is actually easy to make, delicious, and cost effective. You can also make it dairy free, although please check the process for this as I only used full fat Guernsey milk for mine. Let me know if you try making your own.

🧰 Tools

I've been testing a health app called Bevel lately (Apple only, sorry), and I am impressed. I'm on the free plan and find it gives an accessible snapshot of all my health data on any given day. It's a little like the user experience of Whoop, without the extra device (I already wear an Apple Watch).

This is the Bevel widget on my home screen at the time of writing (I'm heading out for a run shortly):

And, while this last recommendation isn't technically a tool, it is a helpful mental reframe if you are trying to reduce the time you spend on social media apps right now:

That's all from me today. Have a great week, and I will be in touch again next weekend.

Best wishes,

Martine

Hello friend, I hope you've had a great week. Mine has been pleasingly busy. I've particularly enjoyed delivering training on a range of topics including public speaking and equality, diversity, and inclusion. On the subject of training, I am delivering a new one-day, in-person course next week called Presenting and Public Speaking With Confidence. I have a few places left, so if you're on-island, available, and interested, I'd love to see you there. It's Liberation Day today in Guernsey, so...

Hello friend, Happy weekend to you. I'll be honest... it's been a bit of a week for me! I'll not go into detail here but it is fair to say there have been highs and lows. Thankfully, things are starting to get back to normal. There really is something to be said for routine and consistency. And sleep. How I love sleep! As always, it's lovely to be in your email inbox. Hello friend, I hope you've had a fantastic week. I'm looking forward to attending a number of events at the Guernsey Literary Festival this weekend (and over the next fortnight). In fact, I have taken next week off to cram in as much culture as I can. If you're Guernsey-based, or have come over for the event, and you happen to spot me, I'd love it if you came over and said hello. Now, let's get to this weekend's digest... ✏️ Doodle Essays This week's doodle essay shares a phrase to try in...
