⚖️ Balancing Productivity With Creativity

Hello friend,

Happy weekend to you.

I'll be honest... it's been a bit of a week for me! I'll not go into detail here but it is fair to say there have been highs and lows. Thankfully, things are starting to get back to normal. There really is something to be said for routine and consistency. And sleep. How I love sleep!

As always, it's lovely to be in your email inbox. Thank you for inviting me.

Here's your weekend digest...

✏️ Doodle Essays

This week's doodle essay shares my reflections about the link between productivity and creativity. I am curious: How do you make time for creativity? Do you schedule it, or do you rely on spontaneity?

As we are at the start of a new month, I also have a Now page update for you here. If you have your own Now page, I'd love to see it. If you are thinking about setting one up, feel free to email me and ask me anything about my personal process.

📚 Read

Here are some articles from other creators I thought you might enjoy:

  • This article from Chris Guillebeau (A Year of Mental Health) shares a list of 10 questions to help you get unstuck. I'd suggest using these questions as journal prompts.
  • This recent Ness Labs newsletter/article discusses one of my favourite topics: The Busyness Trap. It likes well with my doodle essay today, and also this doodle on "work about work".
  • Laura J Martin starts this article for Noéma by asking "How did I end up [...] responding to colleagues while the shower warmed, scrolling grim headlines on the toilet?" The author's reflections on screen time and screen space resonated with me.

If you're curious about the books I'm reading, you can see my library in Notion here: Martine's Library.

A reading-related highlight for me this week was seeing the fabulous poet, Brian Bilston, at the Guernsey Lit Fest. His work is modern, clever, and cheeky (also occasionally sweary; you've been warned!). If you are poetry-curious—as a reader or writer—I highly recommend his new book: How to Lay an Egg With a Horse Inside.

I liked this short brain dump layout video from Uncle Ethel. A brain dump is such a great way to clear your mind and get focused.

For iPhone/iPad users: This video from Trevor Nace shares some great Apple Notes features.

These two podcast episodes are worth a listen:

I've also had the soundtrack to Hamilton The Musical on repeat in my car.

That's all from me today. Have a great week, and I will be in touch again next weekend.

Best wishes,

Martine

Hello friend, I hope you've had a great week. Today's digest combines some of my favourite topics: the arts, health, productivity systems, ambition, apps, and... yogurt. Yes, I love a good yogurt 🤣 Please enjoy today's eclectic offering. ✏️ Doodle Essays This week's doodle is about a sometimes forgotten pillar of health: the arts. It was inspired by Daisy Fancourt's fantastic book, Art Cure. I had the pleasure of seeing Daisy speak at the Guernsey Literary Festival last month. You can read...

Hello friend, I hope you've had a great week. Mine has been pleasingly busy. I've particularly enjoyed delivering training on a range of topics including public speaking and equality, diversity, and inclusion. On the subject of training, I am delivering a new one-day, in-person course next week called Presenting and Public Speaking With Confidence. I have a few places left, so if you're on-island, available, and interested, I'd love to see you there. It's Liberation Day today in Guernsey, so...

Hello friend, I hope you've had a fantastic week. I'm looking forward to attending a number of events at the Guernsey Literary Festival this weekend (and over the next fortnight). In fact, I have taken next week off to cram in as much culture as I can. If you're Guernsey-based, or have come over for the event, and you happen to spot me, I'd love it if you came over and said hello. Now, let's get to this weekend's digest... ✏️ Doodle Essays This week's doodle essay shares a phrase to try in...
