πŸ’ Every Situation Has Two Handles

Hello friend,

I hope you've had a good week.

Before we launch into this weekend's digest, I want to let you know I'm taking an early summer break, so you will not hear from me for the next two weekends. I plan to be back in your inbox on 5 July. While I am away, don't forget you have access to my archives:

OK, that's it for housekeeping.

My favourite doodle this week was inspired by Stoicism. Epictetus said that every situation presents us with two handles. One leads to frustration and negativity, while the other offers understanding and growth. The choice of which handle to grasp is ours. I like this idea; it reminds us that even when we feel we've lost control of a situation, we can reclaim some agency if we want to.

Now, your weekly digest...

✏️ Doodle Essays

Here is this week's short essay collection:

And here are the doodles:

πŸ“š Read

I enjoyed the following articles this week:

If you're curious about the books I'm reading, you can see my library in Tana here: Library. I am particularly enjoying Jacinda Ardern's autobiography, A Different Kind of Power and expect to finish it this weekend.

My short attention span is also getting so much joy from Murdle puzzles right now...

πŸ“Ί Watch

This week, I (re)watched Matt Walker's classic TED talk about sleep as part of some research. It's a masterclass in delivering a complex topic in an engaging and accessible way; the information is actionable and an essential piece of the wellbeing puzzle. Enjoy...

I loved this recent episode of the Louis Theroux podcast, in which he interviewed Ed Sheeran. Although I'm more of a Louis fan than an Ed fan, I found the conversation entertaining and engaging. Heads up: The episode includes a few swear words and talks about the death of Ed's best friend.

I listen to podcasts in the Snipd app, but you can find shows and episodes I recommend wherever you like to listen to podcasts. Use my referral link to get a month of Snipd Premium for free.

That's all from me today. I'll be in touch again in a couple of weeks.

Best wishes,

Martine

Hello friend, I hope this week has been kind to you. As you can see from the subject of this email (and my first doodle essay AND this week's podcast episode 😬), I celebrated a little personal milestone this week: a year off the booze. I was always a bit nervous about sharing my intentions to take a break from alcohol, as people are always going to make some uncomfortable assumptions. But I'm glad I did, and I am also happy I got past those tricky first few weeks and am where I am now, as I...

Hello friend, I hope you've had a good week. This week's doodles suggest running has been on my mind. Can you tell? Whether or not you’re a runner, we can all learn something from elite athletes (and even slow runners like me): building in rest is essential if we want to perform at our best. By the time you read this email, I’ll be getting ready for my first Parkrun. Wish me luck. Before I share this weekend’s digest, I have a quick question. As you may know, I’ve been experimenting with...

Hello friend, This past week, I've been thinking about hobbies. I have a long list of hobbies (some on the quirky side, as shared in my latest podcast episode) and, at times, I've felt a little guilty about the time I dedicate to them. I think the guilt comes from the fact that hobbies are sometimes framed as self-indulgent, "for kids", or something you do when you don't have much else on. But hobbies are important, and their positive impact on our wellbeing is significant. The links between...
