🇬🇬 Celebrating Freedom

Hello friend,

Yesterday was Liberation Day here in Guernsey; a time of remembrance, reflection, and celebration. I spent it quietly: lunch with good friends, a bit of gardening, and plenty of relaxing. I felt a twinge of guilt for skipping the livelier celebrations in town, but then I remembered that freedom is choice, and I chose what I needed. I hope you can do the same for yourself today.

Before we get to this week's digest, a gentle nudge: My live Weekly Review Workshop is happening on Thursday, 29 May at 13.00 UK time. The last session was a small group, which meant plenty of space for personalised advice and support (for a fraction of the cost of coaching). If you'd like to design or refine your weekly review process, please book your space. Thank you.

On with this weekend's digest!

✏️ Doodle Essays

Here is this week's short essay collection:

And here are the doodles:

📚 Read

I enjoyed reading these two articles:

  • Golden Rule by Mike Fisher (while this article is aimed at leaders, it's relevant to everyone if you substitute "your team" for "your people").
  • Toxic Preconditions by Oliver Burkeman (I would have felt uncomfortably "seen" a few years ago by this article; today, I am happy to be working on it!).

If you're curious about the books I'm reading, you can see my library in Tana here: Library.

📺 Watch

Apologies—if you do not use a Kindle, you will want to skip the first two videos, but I have included something for everyone at the end of this section.

I'm not reading my Kindle as often as I'd like at the moment (I've had a couple of unread books on there for a while, but I cannot seem to get to them). I don't think it is a book choice issue, but rather the fact that the device feels disorganised (that, and I am out of the habit). The two videos below have helped me feel motivated to tidy my Kindle and get reading.

I appreciate that those two videos were a little niche, so I am sharing a third that will hopefully benefit all: 10 minutes of breathwork with Adrienne. Bliss...

🎧 Listen

Cal Newport's latest episode of Deep Questions included some excellent advice for people whose roles are meeting-heavy. The episode is here: Ep. 351 Making the Internet Good Again.

If you'd like to listen to the meetings section, here's a 4-minute snip: Meetings Snip.

I listen to podcasts in the Snipd app, but you can find shows and episodes I recommend wherever you like to listen to podcasts. Use my referral link to get a month of Snipd Premium for free.

That's all from me today. Have a great week, and I will be in touch again next weekend.

Best wishes,

Martine

Hello friend, I hope this week has been kind to you. As you can see from the subject of this email (and my first doodle essay AND this week's podcast episode 😬), I celebrated a little personal milestone this week: a year off the booze. I was always a bit nervous about sharing my intentions to take a break from alcohol, as people are always going to make some uncomfortable assumptions. But I'm glad I did, and I am also happy I got past those tricky first few weeks and am where I am now, as I...

Hello friend, I hope you've had a good week. This week's doodles suggest running has been on my mind. Can you tell? Whether or not you’re a runner, we can all learn something from elite athletes (and even slow runners like me): building in rest is essential if we want to perform at our best. By the time you read this email, I’ll be getting ready for my first Parkrun. Wish me luck. Before I share this weekend’s digest, I have a quick question. As you may know, I’ve been experimenting with...

Hello friend, This past week, I've been thinking about hobbies. I have a long list of hobbies (some on the quirky side, as shared in my latest podcast episode) and, at times, I've felt a little guilty about the time I dedicate to them. I think the guilt comes from the fact that hobbies are sometimes framed as self-indulgent, "for kids", or something you do when you don't have much else on. But hobbies are important, and their positive impact on our wellbeing is significant. The links between...
